Alternate Business School

Never in the history of the mankind business and business men were regarded highly by the society. The political, social, economic discourses of couple of centuries are centred around the wealth creation and its distribution and centre of it is the business men. Strong and perceptible cultural and political changes are directly linked to the business and management. Frankenstein monstors are not created by the nerd, introvert scientist but the articulate, sophisticated MBAs who make u feel u need one. But it is possible for a management student to complete his degree without knowing and understanding Marx, Gandhi, plato and venture in to world to sell products naively believing to be immune to culture and political changes it creates in the society, choosing a work is also about choosing lifestyle and culture.

Management is essentially a philosophy, reducing it to mere skill and alluring with money is dangerous. Today we need business school which essentially looks it as a philosophy not merely a processing unit for corporate consumption. Its mandate has to be broader because of the power they hold on its people. It is rather strange that we have so many alternate schools for children but not colleges. Is there is scope and viability for such business schools I believe there is. If we can have MANAGEMENT GURUS, why not sishyas. What can a sishya learn but life from a guru.

Can we built a Management school where community will seek (including corporate) from it not just knowledge and skills but wisdom.

The institution should be focus on three things in this order.
a. Perspective
b. Skills
c. Knowledge

What do we expect from a good teacher, or a fine institution. Knowledge/sophisticated information in todays world is easy get. skills are easier but slightly difficult, you need an environment to practice/do. Perspective is the most difficult one in todays world it requires, seeing, reflecting, doing and reflecting. Seeing, which is increasing the breath of vision, reflection which is structured thinking, needs assistance. this provides a frame of reference.

How can be such a institute built:
a. Philosophy, politics and literature as part of curriculum
b. Focus on management studies  than on business studies.
c. Having local connection and relevance
d. Building infrastructure around it
What should be its mandate:
a. Holistic approach in running business/economy
b. Producing responsible community managers than just business managers

c. Management theories based on local and traditional business practices
d. Thought leaders
I do believe with the strong intellectual tradition we can be thought leaders in management theories. But we have failed to do that. I always feel ‘Small is beautiful” by schumaker should have been written by an indian.
